Deaf-Friendly WordPress: Beyond Video Captioning and Sign Language

When people think about accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing individuals, video captioning and sign language interpreting automatically come to their mind. But it goes beyond that – what about podcasts, webinars, live events, education, employment, telecommunications? Most of it is inaccessible to 20% of population that has some degree of deafness. The majority of deaf and hard of hearing people don’t know sign language to benefit from interpreters and not everyone can lipread or benefit from hearing devices. Not all types of captioning and transcription are same and need to follow different sets of guidelines depending on a type of aural information. Sveta’s presentation will help media producers, event organizers, managers, educators (who use WordPress or are part of WordPress community) better understand about various hearing and communication abilities and preferences of people with hearing loss and learn more about how to improve their aural information to them for their podcasts, videos, webinars, live events, classes, work meetings, and telecommunications. The speaker is an experienced deaf professional providing accessibility consulting services to businesses and gives you the unique opportunity to hear first hand about accessibility for deaf people directly from her.
